The golden rule of shaving is to always use a clean, sharp razor. Unfortunately, many people continue to use the same razor day after day, paying little-to-no attention to its sharpness. Over time, the blade will gradually wear down to the point where it no longer creates a smooth cut. To learn more about the importance of shaving with a clean, sharp razor, keep reading.
Protects Against Razor Bumps
While razor bumps (folliculitis) can form anytime you shave, the condition is far more common when a dull blade is used. Dragging a dull razor across your skin can irritate the hair follicles, pushing them back inside the pores instead of creating a clean cut. And when hairs grow sideways instead of outward, it creates the unsightly skin condition known as razor bumps.
If you’re tired of dealing with razor bumps on a daily basis, try to get into the habit of replacing your razor (or blade) on a regular basis. It’s not a bad idea to have several backup razors in your bathroom cabinet. When you notice your current razor becoming dull, toss it in the trash and replace it with a new one. Trying to get a couple more days out of an old, dull razor isn’t worth the damage it causes to your skin.
It should come as no surprise that using a sharp razor will result in a smoother and closer shave. When the blade becomes dull, there’s greater resistance as it drags across the surface of the skin, resulting in an uneven shave. Of course, this increases the risk of a nicks and cuts, as the blade may become stuck on the skin.
Don’t Shave With a Rusty Razor
When was the last time you checked your razor for signs of rust and corrosion? Just because your razor is sharp doesn’t necessarily mean it’s clean. And shaving with a rusty razor can lead to some pretty serious infections. Bacteria on the tip of a rusty razor can enter the body through the pores when your shave, even if you don’t cut yourself.
There are some steps you can take to discourage rust from forming on your razor, one of which is to clean your razor after each use. When you are finished shaving, rinse it under cold water and then shake it dry.
